It has been a traumatic eleven months for sixteen-year-old Cam Jeffries.
Ever since his mother, Naomi, vanished without a trace nearly a year ago, he and his father have been trying to reassemble the pieces of their shattered lives. But just as they achieve as close to a normal existence as humanly possible, Cam’s chance encounter with a sadistic, vile murderer—known as the Bull’s-Eye Killer—throws their already fragile household on its ear.
Narrowly escaping with his life, and unable to quell the nagging questions that plague him as a result of the killer’s inconceivable escape, Cam conducts his own investigation. With a keen eye, he unveils a secret world hidden in plain sight of the one in which he lives—a world that exists in parallel with his own. With its discovery, he learns there’s more to the Bull’s-Eye Killer than meets the eye. Much more. But most important of all, Cam stumbles upon the sobering truth that his mother may, in fact, still be alive. Just in the last place he could have possibly imagined.

I heard about this book through someone that knows the writer and I decided to take a look. For the price of the Kindle version this is not a bad book, the character of Cam is a little over the top though. I know of no 16 year old kid that basically acts and works like a hardened tested military mind or super sleuth. Now, looking beyond that, the book is well done. The love triangle between Cam and the other two girls in the story seems forced almost, no hiding that he is trying to create a triangle which is famous in many YA books (Twilight, Hunger Games), I think it could have been more subtly done in my opinion. The description of the side lands and the dark lands gave me a head ache, I had to reread the section multiple times and in all honesty, I am more confused now than when I read it the very first time.
The storyline reminded me a lot of the Matrix, mix that in with the video game Portal, and with the little albino kid they have following them around I was reminded of Gollum to a certain extent. Many different genre's coming together in one story line. It was an easy read. I do think that my daughter would really enjoy this book as it is probably targeted more for her age range, I will be following the series as I did find some good parts and the writing is easy to enjoy. It just really felt over the top for me in many regards.

Sideland Sideland Trilogy Book 1 eBook James Sperl Reviews
Loved it. Could not put it down. Wish there were more. I love Wool and related stories. Lots of twists and turns.
Get ready to immerse yourself inside a new and exciting world filled of mystery and inter-dimensional travel like you've never experienced before. Journey along with Cam as he finds himself pulled into the path of a demented serial killer and how the world as he knows it is turned upside down as he uncovers clues about this tragic but strange sequence of events that draw him into a world he never imagined existed. Become entranced at the wondrous yet dangerous lands that are drawn out in front of you from the authors brilliant imagination. This is a book that is hard to put down and you'll be impatiently waiting for book 2 and 3 of this trilogy to surface.
I was looking for a light read to end my summer and instead found a book that kept me enthralled and excited with its descriptive nature and enticing storyline. I couldn't get enough! I found that the more I read, the more I wanted it to continue. I wish I didn't have to wait for the second and third books....I'd love to dive right in and keep Cam's adventures moving on. And who doesn't love a good old-fashioned love triangle!?!?! I don't know who I'm rooting for to win Cam's heart, but I do know that I wish the author would hurry up and release the next two books. As Young Adult fiction goes, I was pleasantly surprised to find such a good read. This book is certain to make the rounds in my teenage daughters' circle of friends.
The story moved at a fast pace and kept me wanting more. I will be looking forward to the next book.
Enjoyed reading the 1st Sideland book and am excited that there will be two more! Interesting premise and excellent writing.
